Squirrel says yes for Rice & no for fruits

This palm squirrel is commonly seen in Sri Lanka. It loves to eat rice more than fruits. This made me smile. I shared this with my friends and family & thought of sharing with you.

Sri Lanka is rich in

Biodiversity. The Island nation is home for thousands of amazingly beautiful creatures. There are three species of palm squirrels found here.

  • Palm Squirrel is (Funambulus palmarum)
  • Flame-striped Jungle Squirrel (Funambulus layardi)
  • Dusky-striped Jungle Squirrel (Funambulus sublineatus)

The Palm Squirrel is widely spread in the Island & its the most common species found in Sri Lanka.

Three beautiful stripes on the back is it’s signature. Middle stripe is long and thick. The squirrels have small ears covered with soft fur.

The bushy tails are long as their head and body. The tail balances & provides them extra power to acrobat around branches of the tree or to take amazing jumps from one tree to the other.

The nest is always in a soft trunk of a tree or in the crown of a palm tree or in some areas it could be inside the roof structure of a house. It's made of anything they can find, such as grass, natural coir, tree barks. But, squirrels make sure that the interior is soft, warm & cozy.

Unlike the common bird's nests, entrance to the nest is from the side. Squirrel mothers give birth to two or three one time.
